Gates of Olympus by Pragmatic Play is one of the most played online slots in Australia and across the world. Released in 2021, it remains a fixture in casino lobbies five years later — a rare achievement that comes down to genuinely well-designed mechanics rather than marketing.
This guide covers the full mechanics, every symbol payout, how multipliers and free spins actually work, what the Ante Bet and Bonus Buy features do, and honest strategy for high-volatility play.
6×5 Scatter Pays grid
The game uses a 6-column, 5-row grid with 30 symbol positions. There are no paylines. Instead, you win whenever 8 or more identical symbols land anywhere on the grid simultaneously — this is the Scatter Pays (Pay Anywhere) system. Position doesn’t matter; only count.
Tumble mechanic
After any winning spin, all symbols involved in the win disappear and new symbols fall in from above. This creates a chain of consecutive wins from a single spin, known as a tumble. Tumbles continue until no new win is formed. Each tumble is a fresh opportunity for multiplier symbols to appear.
Random multiplier orbs
On any spin or tumble, Zeus can drop golden orb symbols onto the grid carrying multiplier values from 2× to 500×. When the current tumble sequence ends, all multiplier orbs visible on screen are added together and the combined total multiplies the entire win from that sequence.
No wild symbols
Gates of Olympus has no wild symbols. Zeus himself functions as the scatter trigger, not a wild. Every win is formed entirely by identical symbol clusters. This means the game relies entirely on cluster size and multiplier orbs for its big win potential, with no wild substitutions to help.
ZEUS MULTIPLIER ORB VALUES
All orb values on screen at the end of a tumble sequence are added together (not multiplied). If two orbs land showing 100× and 50×, the total multiplier applied to that spin’s win is 150×. In the free spins round, multipliers accumulate across the entire bonus rather than resetting after each tumble.
All values shown as a multiplier of your total stake. Minimum winning cluster is 8 identical symbols. The same thresholds apply to every symbol — only the payout values differ between high and low-tier symbols.

Cumulative Total Multiplier
This is the defining feature of the bonus round. Instead of multipliers resetting after each tumble, they accumulate across ALL spins in the round. Every multiplier orb that lands on a winning spin is added to the Total Multiplier, which is then applied to that win. By spin 15, a series of 10× orbs could push the Total Multiplier to 100×, 200×, or more, applied to every winning cluster.
Multipliers never reset mid-bonus
Unlike the base game where multipliers reset at the start of each new spin, in free spins mode the Total Multiplier carries forward. If spin 3 added 50× and spin 7 added 100×, those combine — the Total Multiplier is now at least 150× for all subsequent winning spins in that bonus round.
The 5,000× cap applies in free spins too
All wins, including free spin wins multiplied by the Total Multiplier, are capped at 5,000× your total stake per round. If the Total Multiplier grows large enough that any win would exceed the cap, the round ends immediately and 5,000× is paid. This is the maximum you can win in a single bonus round.
ANTE BET — 25% extra stake
Enables the Ante Bet by adding 25% to your total stake. In return, the probability of triggering free spins doubles. The RTP stays at 96.5% regardless.
When to use it: If you want to reach the bonus round faster and are comfortable spending 25% more per spin. On a $1 spin, Ante Bet makes it $1.25.
BONUS BUY — 100× stake
Pay 100× your total stake to immediately enter the free spins round, bypassing the base game entirely. On a $1 spin, this costs $100. On $5, it costs $500.
Caution: The 5,000× cap still applies. A 100× buy that results in a 200× bonus return gives you 2× your cost. But below average runs are common.
Gates of Olympus is a purely RNG-driven slot. No strategy can influence where symbols land or when Zeus drops multiplier orbs. What strategy does is manage your exposure to high volatility, protect your session length, and make informed decisions about features.
Play demo first — the free spins are rare
Gates of Olympus is high volatility. Long stretches without the bonus round are normal. Test the base game rhythm in demo before depositing. Understanding how often scatters land — and how long you can wait — prevents frustrating sessions.
Flat stake sizing protects your session
Keep each spin at 1–2% of your session budget. With a $100 budget that’s $1–$2 per spin. This gives you 50–100 spins before a free spins trigger, which is a realistic sample on high volatility. Raising your stake to chase a bonus is the fastest way to exhaust funds.
The Ante Bet is worth it for bonus hunters
If your primary goal is reaching the free spins round, the Ante Bet (25% stake increase, 2× scatter probability) is mathematically justified. You pay more per spin but reduce the average number of spins to trigger. Good for short sessions targeting the bonus.
Bonus Buy: high risk, same RTP
The 100× bonus buy gives instant free spins access. The RTP stays at 96.5%. This is useful if you don’t want to grind the base game, but it costs 100 spins’ worth of stake upfront. If the free spins underdeliver, you have little bankroll left. Use it only with money you’re comfortable losing immediately.
The 5,000× cap is a hard ceiling
Many Gates of Olympus sessions that appear capable of massive wins are cut off at 5,000×. Don’t set your expectations based on streamer clips where 3,000×+ free spin wins look routine — those represent hundreds of hours of gameplay distilled into highlights.
Check the casino’s RTP version
Some casinos use a lower RTP variant of Gates of Olympus (often 94% or 95%). Always open the paytable in-game and check the stated RTP before you spin. If it’s below 96.5%, the casino is using a reduced-value version of the game.

Gates of Olympus has an RTP of 96.5%, which is above the online slots average of around 96%. Note that some casinos may offer a lower RTP version of the game, so it’s worth checking the paytable before you spin. The RTP stays the same whether you use the Ante Bet or the Bonus Buy feature.
The maximum win in Gates of Olympus is capped at 5,000× your total stake. Once this cap is reached, the round ends and the maximum payout is awarded, even if the combination on screen appears capable of exceeding it. On a $1 bet that’s $5,000; on a $5 bet, $25,000.
Zeus randomly drops golden orb multiplier symbols onto the grid with values from 2× to 500×. When a tumble sequence ends, all multiplier symbols currently on screen are added together and the combined total is applied to that spin’s win. In the free spins round, multipliers accumulate across all spins rather than resetting each tumble sequence.
Free spins are triggered by landing 4, 5, or 6 Zeus scatter symbols anywhere on the 6×5 grid. 4 scatters award 15 free spins plus a 3× stake payout; 5 scatters give 15 free spins plus 5× stake; 6 scatters give 15 free spins plus 100× stake. Additional scatters during free spins add 5 more free spins each time.
The Ante Bet increases your total stake by 25% and doubles your probability of triggering the free spins round by landing more scatter symbols. The RTP stays at 96.5% with or without Ante Bet. It’s useful if you’re specifically chasing the bonus round and are willing to pay more per spin for the increased trigger rate.
